Background Information

This Satellite meeting will shed new light on the mechanisms underlying neuronal cell-cell adhesion molecules. It focuses on the molecular and cellular events regulating these processes and their implications for human diseases and brain repair.

The scientific leaders in the field of cell adhesion molecules will present their more recent findings, covering a diversity of topics ranging from molecular and cellular events regulating these processes and their implications for human diseases and cognitive dysfunction. From the generation and migration of stem cells to the growth of dendrites and axons and the formation and stabilization of synaptic contacts: exciting recent advances have unravelled some of the complexity and diversity of the molecular mechanisms involved and to highlight the critical role played by some of these mechanisms in cognitive functions and mental disorders. Schizophrenia, autism, mental retardation have all recently been proposed to be linked to dysfunctions of signalling through cell-cell adhesion and defects in formation and plasticity of neural networks.
